Audience Research: Responses

Before doing any planning for my music video, I did some research to find out what people expected to see in a music video of my genre. I asked them the types of themes they were expecting to see and how they liked the music video to be edited. I asked my target audience of teenagers, and some people from the age group above and below, what their opinions were when it came to my questions.

80% of the people that filled out my questionnaire were female and the other 20% were male, for the rest of the questions this could show some bias due to the difference in genders. So I am going to keep an open mind about the responses. 

When it came to the question below, it is clear that people are divided and most people think that the artist shouldn't have to be in the music video. This question however was slightly vague, and afterwards I probably should have asked if they like when an artist IS in their music video. Just to see the balance of views.

This one below was very important for my initial ideas, because I had watched a number of videos that were in order, and a number that were not. I was unable to decide whether to do this in my own music video.

This one below was also very important, because I knew that I wanted to tell some kind of story through my music video. To see almost 50% of the people I had asked say they liked it, was very encouraging.

What is: Phsycadelic Pop

My genre of music is Phsycadelic Pop.

Psychedelic pop is a psychedelic musical style inspired by the sounds of psychedelic folk and psychedelic rock, but applied to a pop music setting. It reached its peak during the late 1960s, declining rapidly in the early 1970s.

It originates from the 1960's when the Beach Boys Brian Wilson began to experiment with psychedelic drugs, eventually resulting in their album Pet Sounds which is credited for sparking a psychedelic pop revolution. Before Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Rock had existed mainly among garage bands, however Pet Sounds had been the inspires mainstream pop acts to take part in the psychedelic pop culture.

Psychedelic Pop is still prevalent today through bands such as Tame Impala who's music is heavily influenced by Psychedelic Rock from the late 60's and early 70's. Tame Impala use a number of effects with their music including, phasing, delay, reverb and fuzz. 

My artist Polly Howe also uses the same techniques in her music and they all include a number of similar effects which she adds when editing the track together. I really like her music and the genre psychedelic pop because of its air of escapism within the music. Due to the fact that she is an unsigned artist, I looked at the record label that Tame Impala are signed to and I decided to use the record label 'Fiction' that they are signed to. It is a British record label founded in 1978. It is owned by Universal Music Group and is based in the UK. I decided that because of the nature of Polly's music and her heavy indie influence, she would fit in well with this record company.

My Chosen Artist: Polly Howe

My chosen artist is my friend Polly Howe aka Pollygon who sings and produces her own music and posts on soundcloud. I decided to use her song 'They Are' after she allowed me to choose from the list of her music.

Postmodernism in a Modern Music Video

When researching postmodernism, we researched music videos to analyse in depth and create a presentation on.

I decided to analyse One Directions 'Best Song Ever' video as I felt it fitted with the postmodern style of music video.
